District 3 (North-east) bowlers had poor performances at the Scottish Championships in Ayr, writes Mike Barron.

There were 15 Gents, Ladies and Mixed Pair events, only four reached the second round, and they were all beaten then.

The surprise was the failure of Carla Banks, of Inverurie, a Scottish player in the World Championship in Australia later this month.

Carla lost in both the Junior Singles and Ladies Singles in the first round.

She lost in the Junior Singles 19-21 to Emma Blyth of Tranent who went on to reach the semi-final.

In the Ladies she met Busby’s Donna Fleming 12-21 who then lost in the third round.

Oldmeldrum Pairs, Elaine Brown and Joan Western, first beat Mount Vernon 20-11 but lost to Calderbank 12-21.

Newhills were in three competitions. The Triples lost to Tanfield 9-21, the Fours reached the second round first defeating St Vincent 19-15 but lost to Buchan Park 9-20; and their Over 55s in Fours lost 11-12 to Helensburgh.

Balgownie’s over 55 Singles player Aileen Donald beat London Road 21-7 but lost in next round 12-21 to Windygates

The only mixed competition is the Pairs where Lucy Willox and Doug Fraser of Harlaw beat Fife’s Abbeyview pair 14-9, but then lost heavily to Troon 7-25.

The seven Gents competitions saw all the District 3 (North-east) players knocked out in the first round.

Liam Willox (Harlaw) in the Junior Singles lost 7-21 to Dunfermline’s Daniel Martin who went on to win the title.

The Belhelvie Singles player lost to Strathmiglo 6-22.

Willie Christie and Gary Simpson of Ellon lost 6-22 to Galston.

Westhill lost 9-16 to Castlehills in the Triples.

Ellon were represented in Fours losing 6-21 to Irvine Park.

The Over 50s Singles saw Brian Cheyne lose 8-21 to Priorscroft.

Melrose took the Over 50s title 17-4 against Newhills.
