Engineers have been working overnight to repair phone and internet connections in Inverurie and to the surrounding area after accidental damage to underground cables.

Around 6000 customers were impacted, but some services are starting to be restored.

A spokesperson for Openreach said: "A third party operating heavy machinery in the vicinity of Inverurie telephone exchange accidently damaged multiple underground cables yesterday evening.

"We've had teams of engineers working tirelessly throughout the night and more than half of the extensive damage is already repaired.

"We'll continue to give this top priority until all phone and broadband services are back up and running."

The adjacent site will be the location of a new flagship supermarket for the Farmfoods chain.
