This programme of events for winter focuses on making Lumsden luminous and offers workshops and celebrations that focus on bringing light, warmth, and creativity to the long nights ahead.

From mug making and paper kiln firing to lantern and candle making, participants will join together to light up the village with their work and enjoy a few surprises too.

On December 15 they will also celebrate one year of the Community Making Space with a light filled party.

All events are free and open to all ages - children must be accompanied by an adult.

To book your free space please email our Community Arts Organiser, Mara communities@ssw.org.uk

Events take place in the Community Making Space, SSW, 1 Main Street, Lumsden.

Ceremonial Mug Making Workshop - Sunday, November 26, 2pm – 4pm.

Join artist Eva Masterman for an afternoon of clay mug making in the ceramics studio.

Working with Eva you’ll be introduced to a wide range of clay skills, such as slab, coil and pinch building. You will get to design and make your own ceremonial mug and decorate it ready for firing in paper kilns, later in the week.

As well as building your mug you will be able to choose a range of combustible materials to wrap your mug in which will then be packed into paper kilns built later in the week. Feel free to also bring natural materials to add to your firing.

Paper kiln firing - Friday, December 1 6pm – 8pm.

Join the team at SSW for an evening of food and fire celebrating the end of the Building the Clay Commons week. The evening will kick off in the SSW yard with the lighting paper kilns packed with mugs made earlier in the week. The evening will be a chance to see what has been happening throughout the week, meet artists and enjoy food and fire together.

Paper kilns will be lit at 6pm accompanied by a toast to the kiln gods. Paper kilns are ovens made from paper and clay, which will have your work packed inside, and a fire is lit underneath. This will provide a lovely smokey surface to your work (and a warm fire to huddle round). Food will be available from 6.30pm.

This event is part of Eva’s PhD research, ‘Building the Clay Commons’, exploring the potential of clay to support communities.

Lantern Making Workshop - Sunday, December 3, 2pm – 4pm.

Join the team for a fun workshop creating lanterns from recycled and repurposed materials to parade through the village to mark the one year anniversary of the Community Making Space later in the month. The workshop provides a great opportunity to spark creativity through sustainable crafting and gives new life to everyday materials.

Candle Making Session - Sunday, December 10, 2pm – 4pm.

Together with the team discover the art of candle making using natural bee wax and recycled candle remnants at this creative workshop. Participants will prepare wicks, melt wax, add fragrance and dye, and pour wax into decorative molds to craft their own unique candles.

Luminous Lumsden: Community Making Space 1 year anniversary - Friday, December 15, 5pm – 8pm.

5pm – 5:45pm – Light walk.

6pm – 6:30pm – Drinks, toasts and light switch on.

6.30 – 8pm – Music, food and dancing.

Festive celebrations will kick off with a magical lantern walk bringing light to all corners of the village. Gathering at SSW to carry handmade lanterns, candles and torches that will illuminate the walk through local trails and parks. Throughout the walk, it will pause at various spots to create light drawings and return to SSW to party, celebrate the year and turn on the festive lights.

Please bring handheld lanterns, torches, head lamps etc and wear warm and waterproof clothing for the walk.
