A 23-year-old personal trainer who grew up in Keith is among 18 contestants who'll be battling it in a new BBC series.

Rachel Carstairs is competing for the £100,000 prize in Survivor, which was filmed in the Dominican Republic.

Billed as a "test of brains, brawn and betrayal", the players are set a range of physical and mental challenges until only one is left.

Rachel said: "If someone had told me that I'd be living on a beach in the Caribbean this summer I would have laughed in their face.

"I'd never heard of Survivor until the start of the year when I saw the Australian series.

"Me and my boyfriend binge-watched every single episode and I fell in love with the show.

"I really enjoy challenges and adrenaline rushes so taking part in Survivor was a perfect match for me."

The contestants on Survivor were deprived of many physical comforts and even went hungry on occasions.

Rachel said: "Some of us were scraping the pot and licking the spoon. I was also slightly scared of the wee creepy crawlies to begin with, but you get used to it and forget they're even there.

"I'm used to not seeing my family as I moved to Glasgow when I was 17, but I was nervous about not knowing what they were up to.

"Being away for such a long time made me realise how much I missed them.

"But I learned from the show that I really am capable of anything. Being so young and giving up everything in my life to take part in Survivor was huge for me and I was so grateful to have been given the opportunity.

"The most important things to me going into the game were to be myself and to know my strategy – you’ll have to tune in to find out more."

Survivor will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the very near future.
