A Turriff United Football Club supporter who continuously goes above and beyond to support players and the wider club has been recognised as this year's Citizen Of The Year.

The award, organised by Turriff And District Rotary Club, recognises members of the local community who have made an outstanding contribution in some way.

This year the accolade has been presented to Pearl Hendry, an avid supporter and behind-the-scenes volunteer of Turriff United Football Club.

Not long after moving to Turriff 15 years ago, Pearl and her husband were wandering along the waterside when they decided to pop in and check out the local team - and the rest is history.

Rarely missing a match, Pearl also provides endless support behind the scenes helping with fundraising, cleaning, maintenance and the all important job of ensuring that strips are washed.

In fact, the club commented "the only thing she hasn't done is scored a goal for us".

Over the years Pearl has touched many lives, with many commenting on her passion and commitment to the club and the team.

The award was presented by Turriff And District Rotary Club's president Olin Thores at the club's Christmas dinner, where Pearl and her husband were invited as guests of honour.

Talking about receiving the accolade, Pearl said: "I was in complete shock when they got in touch, I felt like there must be other people who deserve it more.

"I thought I might pass out, I was so surprised.

"It really is a wonderful honour.

"I really love the football club, it's just something that I enjoy."

Chairman of the football club Gairn Ritchie said: "Pearl is the stalwart of Turriff United.

"It doesn't matter if you're the young 16 year old boy starting off on your football career, if you're the most experienced player in the team, if you're the manager, the secretary or even the chairman... you shout for Pearl when you need something.

"If it's a football strip, a cup of tea, some first aid, sellotape, absolutely anything ... we all shout on Pearl.

"She is the one who keeps us right.

"She loves the football and she can be seen in the stadium at any time of day - we'd be totally lost without her."
