WATCH: Champion crowned at New Deer Show's 175th anniversary

Thousands flocked to New Deer Show over the weekend to celebrate its 175th anniversary.

Overnight rain cleared by the morning on Saturday and the event avoided predicted thunderstorms, with visitors prepared for the muddy conditions.

The Champion of Champions title went to a yearling British Blue heifer named Solway View Rainbow owned by Jack Hendry (26) of Heads of Auchinderran Farm near Keith. It also won the any other continental breed category and was the overall cattle winner.

Jack said: "I bought her in Carlisle at the bull and heifer show in May.

"She was breed champion at Echt Show last week but never went any further.

"I am also going to enter her into Nairn, Turriff, Keith and Grantown shows.

"I am absolutely delighted to have won the championship, its the best I have ever done.

"It's good to be back at the shows it gives you something to look forward to.

"I'm here with my family and it's been a great day which will be hard to top."

The reserve winner in the cattle was from the Aberdeen-Angus breed. It was a 15-month-old heifer called Newton-Struthers Espresso from Graeme Rhind of Newton of Struthers, Kinloss.

The overall sheep championship title went to a Cheviot ram owned by Neil and Stuart Barclay of Insch.

Reserve in the sheep was a Beltex gimmer named Ellies How Do You like Me from Ellie Miller of North Lurg, Midmar.

The overall horse and goat winners also competed for the Champion of Champions title.

As well as the livestock judging the headline act of the weekend was the Red Hot Chilli Pipers who performed on Sunday afternoon.

Also entertaining in the ring over the weekend was Ellon Pipe Band which featured on Saturday.

There was a fun demonstration from the dogs of Hatties Hoopers which are based at Methlick.

The event also featured a baby show; children's pet parade and fancy dress; races for the youngsters; and musical cars.

There was an extensive display of vintage tractors, pony club games and a truck show.
