Dog owners in Aberdeenshire have been advised to be on the lookout when out and about with their pets after two recent incidents involving adders.

A spokesperson for Kirkton Vet Centre in Stonhaven explained: "We have had two cases this week of dogs being bitten by adders.

"These venomous snakes are more active in the warmer weather and especially in moorland areas such as our local glens.

"Their bite can be extremely dangerous to dogs and humans and can cause serious problems.

"Dogs can be more likely to be bitten as they sniff the environment which can disturb the snakes.

"Please be aware when walking your dogs in these areas to keep to footpaths as much as possible, and to be aware that these snakes can be difficult to spot.

"If you feel your dog may have been bitten by an adder, please get in touch with your vet immediately."

The report of the incidents prompted reports of the snakes being seen, in particular a mature adult which was photographed near Banchory basking in the sunshine on Friday.

At roughly 50 to 60cm long, adders can be distinguished by a black/brown zigzag pattern along their backs and a V marking on the back of their head.

If your dog is bitten, owners may see two puncture wounds at the centre of a swelling.

The dog may also show signs of pain, bleeding, bruising, and lameness and bites are most commonly found on the dog’s legs or face.

Adder venom, if absorbed into the rest of the body, can cause an inflammatory reaction leading to lethargy, fever, increased heart rate, vomiting, drooling and may appear wobbly on their feet and treatment should be sought as soon as possible.
