Val McDermid to chair An Evening with Tess Gerritsen at Aberdeen’s Music Hall

Acclaimed Scottish crime writer Val McDermid will chair An Evening with Tess Gerritsen in an exciting precursor to Aberdeen’s crime writing festival, Granite Noir.

The New York Times best-selling author will talk to the ‘Queen of Scottish Crime’ at Aberdeen’s Music Hall on Friday, January 26 about her career as a physician and novelist and share her newest blockbuster novel, Listen To Me.

This is a special prologue to Granite Noir, which will take place with events across the city from February 20-25.

Gerritsen is well known for creating compelling protagonist, homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles which inspired the hit TV series Rizzoli and Isles.

Aberdeen Performing Arts director of programming and creative projects, Ben Torrie, said: “This is sure to be a fascinating discussion between the illustrious Val McDermid, a much-loved and respected figure of Scottish crime fiction and Tess Gerritsen, whose career as a physicist has informed her move into the world of crime writing.

"It’s the perfect way to get in the mood for Granite Noir in February.”

Val McDermid has sold over 17 million books to date across the globe and has been translated into more than 40 languages.

She is perhaps best known for her Wire in the Blood series, featuring clinical psychologist Dr Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan, which was adapted for television starring Robson Green and Hermione Norris. She has written three other series: private detective Kate Brannigan, journalist Lindsay Gordon and, most recently, cold-case detective Karen Pirie, whose debut appearance in The Distant Echo is soon to become a major ITV series. She has also published in several award-winning standalone novels, books of non-fiction, short story collections and a children’s picture book, My Granny is a Pirate.

Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.

Tess's first medical thriller, Harvest, was released in hardcover in 1996, and it marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list. Her novels have hit bestseller lists ever since. Among her titles are Gravity, The Surgeon, Vanish, The Bone Garden, and The Spy Coast.

Her books have been translated into 40 languages, and more than 40 million copies have been sold around the world.

Listen To Me is an exciting, new adventure introducing a whip smart protagonist, Maggie Bird, with a backstory freighted with intrigue and espionage. The discussion will be followed by a question and answer session and signing, with books available to purchase on site provided by Waterstones.
