Mike Fox has been a stalwart of Fochabers Cricket Club for years and fills a number of roles – club captain, groundsman, scorer and umpire.

Fox was selected as a Community Cricket Hero by the Marleybone Cricket Club for his work with his village club and the North of Scotland Cricket Association.

He helped negotiate a 100-year lease of their picturesque ground on the banks of the River Spey.

The Fochabers cricketer said: “The fact that people have gone out their way to nominate me for the work I do is humbling.

"To get some recognition, have a day out here and speak with these lovely like-minded community heroes is incredibly flattering."

The MCC ran a campaign – in conjunction with The Cricketer magazine – to find 11 Community Cricket Heroes from around the UK.

The winners enjoyed a seat in the President's Suite, alongside the actor and comedian, for the England v Ireland Test match last week.

The 11 winners were chosen from hundreds of nominations and by a special panel which included Fry and former England cricketers Claire Taylor and Mike Gatting.

Fox added: “Having the opportunity to come to this part of Lord’s and watch a game has been so rewarding, and I’m really thankful and appreciative for what has been given to us.”

MCC President Stephen Fry said: “It was fantastic to meet and welcome Mike and our MCC Community Cricket Heroes to Lord’s and in some small way thank them for their amazing contributions to the grassroots game.

"It’s right that we recognise and celebrate the vital role they, and countless other individuals like them, play in making our game what it is. They epitomise all that is good about the sport and the values of MCC.”
