Coronavirus update.

THE number of coronavirus-related deaths in Moray is now ten, an increase of two from last week.

Figures released by the National Records of Scotland show two people from Moray died in hospital between May 4 and May 10.

Of the ten deaths across Moray since the outbreak began, four have occurred in hospital, four at home and two in care homes.

NHS Grampian, meanwhile, recorded 28 new coronavirus-related deaths across the same period, taking the health board's total to 187.

The week prior (between April 27 and May 3) there were 30 coronavirus-related deaths across Grampian and two in Moray – showing the figures remain relatively stable at the moment.

There are still 57 confirmed cases of covid-19 in Moray, meaning no more have been confirmed overnight. Grampian's total is 1123 – an overnight increase of 21.

Neighbouring Aberdeenshire (pop: 261,500) has seen 99 deaths from 396 confirmed cases of covid-19, while Aberdeen City (pop: 227,500) has seen 78 deaths from 656 cases. Highland has 182 positive cases and 39 deaths (population 235,500).

Scotland-wide, 3213 people have died due to coronavirus since the outbreak began, according to NRS figures. That includes all deaths where coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate, even if they person hadn't tested positive for the virus.

Of those deaths, 415 were recorded in the last week – a decrease on the 523 recorded last week and the 658 recorded two weeks ago.

The number of deaths in care homes decreased, too, from 310 to 238, but accounted for 57 per cent of all deaths across the country between May 4 and May 10.

76 per cent of those who have died have been aged 75 or older, with 51 per cent male and 49 per cent female.

The Scottish Government's daily update showed a total of 1973 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus. 77,750 people in Scotland have been tested through NHS labs, with 63,821 negative tests and 13,929 positive.

Newly-released figures

Figures released for the first time today also show more than 90 per cent of those dying due to coronavirus had an underlying health condition. 91 per cent of those who died due to covid-19 in April had at least one pre-existing medical condition.

New figures also show those in the most deprived areas are 2.3 times more likely to die from coronavirus than those living in the least deprived areas. The age-standardised rate of deaths involving covid-19 in the most deprived quintile is 86.5 per 100,000 of the population. The least deprived quintile's death rate is 38.2 per 100,000 of the population.

And, lastly, new figures also highlight a higher death rate in urban areas. The age-standardised rate for coronavirus deaths in large urban areas is 76.8 per 100,000 of the population – more than four times higher than the 17.9 per 100,000 of he popular in rural locations.
