Turriff United opened their new Highland League season with a 4-1 win over Inverurie Locos at The Haughs.

United striker Neil Gauld came back to haunt his former club by scoring a brace in his competitive debut for the hosts.

John Allan also got his first league goal for Turriff and Ewan Clark was on the scoresheet too.

Garry Wood scored for Locos which proved to be just a consolation.

United had an early chance when Callan Gray hit an effort towards goal. Andy Reid was off his line but he recovered well to save the ball.

A good move from the hosts saw a ball played to Gauld in the box but he could not keep his shot down and it went over the crossbar.

Demilade Yunus made an excellent run into the Turriff box, however, Max Foster was there to deny him with a great tackle.

United took the lead on about the half hour mark when Allan sent in an inviting ball to Gauld and he headed it home.

It was 2-0 shortly after when Gauld assisted Allan this time whose header hit the post and went in.

Locos were then awarded a free-kick which was taken by Calum Dingwall who hit over the bar.

A pass was played to Gauld, who was looking a real threat, but Andy Reid was on him to block the opportunity.

Just before half-time Dingwall hit a decent shot towards goal which swung wide and went out of play.

After the break the home side scored their third goal quickly. Allan hit a long range shot which struck the post and Gauld was on hand to put the rebound into the net.

Turriff were than awarded a penalty after Andy Reid brought down Gauld in the box. The striker stepped up to take it and the goalkeeper went the right way and saved it.

Locos pulled a goal back when a Dingwall corner found Wood and he headed the ball past Turriff keeper David Dey.

The visitors had another opportunity from a corner when Dingwall got a ball to Wood again but his effort was off target.

Dingwall fired a shot at goal, which took a deflection, was saved by Dey, hit the woodwork and none of the Locos attackers could capitalise on the rebound.

United completed the scoring when a high ball was not dealt with by Andy Reid or the away side's defence and substitute Clark netted from close range.

A late Locos free-kick reached Greg Mitchell who hit an overhead kick which was straight at Dey who saved the effort.
