Turriff In Bloom held a very successful coffee morning in Turriff Legion on Saturday, which was an opportunity to learn more about the group and its history as well as raising money for the group's projects.

The group's activities started in 2000 under the umbrella of Turriff And District Limited, headed up by the late Mike Stephen.

In 2002 it was decided that the group should be independent, with it's own committee, constitution and bank account, and Turriff Town Pride Group was formed.

Last year the group rebranded to become Turriff In Bloom, to highlight the work carried out by volunteers in the community.

At the time the group's main focus were on the hanging baskets around the town centre, and over time this has expanded to include tubs and other floral displays around the town.

Over the years Aberdeenshire Council have provided summer bedding plants and treasurer Rose Logan thanked them for these contributions, as well as this year thanking Turriff and District Agricultural Association for their contribution of floral tubs following a successful Turriff Show.

This year the group have been very busy, firstly with the Queens Road flower bed at the swimming pool, a joint effort between Turriff in Bloom, Turriff Gardening Club, Turriff & District Community Council, Turriff Rotary Club and pupils from Turriff Academy getting this planted up for the Queens Platinum Jubilee.

The group have also been involved in the completion of the new Welcome To Turriff sign and repairing and refreshing various benches around the town throughout the summer.

While many things may have changed over the group's two decade long history, one thing which has remained the same is an enthusiastic face leading the way, and for this the long service of John Smith was also recognised at Saturday's coffee morning.

He joined the group as treasurer in 2002, later becoming chairperson and holding the role for almost 20 years.

A true stalwart of the Turriff community, it was also noted that he has served as a member of Turriff And District Community Council for 30 years.

In recognition of his unwavering dedication, the group made a presentation to John and his wife Elizabeth for her continued support.
