Councillors have approved the commencement of a traffic regulation order for a Blackburn road after concerns were raised about parking at the village's Co-op convenience store.

Councillor Glen Reid brought them forward as a member promoted issue requesting a review of the parking at the loading bay area of the shop.

The problems focused on restricted visibility, by way of parked vehicles, for road users exiting the car park at the rear of the store on Main Road.

At a meeting of the Garioch area committee in June officers proposed to promote a new loading bay layout/marking on the road, at its junction with the shop car park, which was approved by councillors.

The report from roads manager Brian Strachan went before the area committee during its meeting on Tuesday.

It recommended members authorise the commencement of the statutory procedures for the order.

The report outlined: "The road service is seeking to promote the introduction of a ‘Reserved Loading Bay’ restriction (Loading only road markings) on Main Road, at its junction with the Co-op car park, where drivers continue to park on the existing hatched markings blocking visibility for vehicles exiting the junction.

"Following approval by this committee it is proposed to undertake a 28-day statutory consultation with interested parties such as the Royal Automobile Club, Road Haulage Association and other road user groups.

"This would be followed by a 21-day public consultation with site notices erected at the affected location(s) and giving anyone who wishes to object to the proposals, the opportunity to do so.

"If there are objections made and not withdrawn, the matter must be referred to the area committee for further consideration and determination."

Councillor Glen Reid said during the meeting: "This is my member promoted issue and I am really pleased that committee members agreed that something had to be done.

"I am glad that this is enforceable as there are a lot of concerns. It will improve the situation and that's what we are looking for.

"There is a real concern among the community that this a black spot waiting for an accident to happen."

The committee agreed with the recommendations in the report to commence the traffic regulation order.
