THE Conservative candidate for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East has vowed to champion Scottish Fishermen if elected.

Douglas Ross put pen to paper for the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) Pride in Our Seas campaign during a visit to Fraserburgh Harbour, saying he was “delighted” to do so.

The SFF are asking all candidates who are standing in fishing communities to pledge to champion them if elected on July 4.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Ross said he has made standing up for fishermen and coastal communities a key part of his election campaign, going on to say it was "great" to meet with the federation again and give his full backing to their election pledge.

He praised the federation for their "tireless" support for fishermen and added that he will always stand firm against any reckless plans - such as Highly Protected Marine Areas - which he claimed would put local livelihoods at risk.

Mr Ross went on to state that only a vote for him and the Scottish Conservatives will ensure Aberdeenshire North and Moray East have an MP fully focused on standing up for their interests, rather than an SNP only focused on pushing for independence.

He continued: "I was delighted to be in Fraserburgh and sign the Scottish Fishermen's Federation's election pledge.

"If fortunate enough to be elected on July 4, I will always stand up for our fishermen and coastal communities.

"It was great to meet with the SFF and thank them for their tireless work in standing up for the fishing industry, which is so crucial to the local economy.

"I have already had many key meetings with the sector throughout this campaign to hear about the challenges facing them and the support they are looking for.

"By signing this pledge, I am fully supportive of all its aims. I will always back measures to help fishing communities thrive, while also firmly opposing reckless policies such as Highly Protected Marine Areas which would risk rural livelihoods.

"If local voters unite behind me and the Scottish Conservatives on July 4th, then they can beat the SNP and ensure they have a local champion as their MP who will be fully focused on their priorities, rather than an SNP MP only pushing for independence."
