Cornwall-based musician Sarah McQuaid will play the newly-renovated Gartly Community Hall on Saturday, May 13 as part of the Tin Hut Sessions.

Dual Irish and American citizen Sarah has won many accolades in the music world, including the lifetime achievement award at the Ards International Guitar Festival.

Born in Spain, to a Spanish father and an American mother, and raised in Chicago, Sarah’s work uses her rich cultural background to inform her “captivating, unorthodox songwriting”, according to website PopMatters.

Music reviewer Neil March from Trust The Doc described her voice as having “shades of Joni Mitchell in a jam with Karen Carpenter and Lana Del Rey.”

Her latest project, titled If We Dub Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous, is a bold remix of her 2018 single and album If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous.

The single puts an experimental dub twist on the original folk track, with acid and ambient pioneer Tim Norman from duo UVX giving it a dub remix.

Sarah said the inspiration for the new single came from a half-joking conversation with her manager, producer and sound engineer Martin Stansbury.

After Tim reached out to Martin for help with a separate project, Martin seized the opportunity to turn the dub star’s skills to Sarah’s music.

Speaking about new track, she said: “I’m absolutely thrilled by what Tim has done with the track.

“And I’m also thrilled with the suitably grungy, lo-fi video Martin created to go with it, especially as it emphasises the environmental message implicit in the original song.”

Sarah’s visit to Gartly, on her zig-zagging UK tour, is sandwiched between dates in Campbeltown and Drumnadrochit.

The energy of her live performances has been captured in 2021 project The St Buryan Sessions, which combines a live album and video series.

Tickets are available in advance from Orb’s Bookshop, Huntly, by emailing chas@myticefarm.co.uk or ringing 01466 720234.
