A NEWMILL takeaway owner delivered a taster of Chinese culture to local nursery youngsters this week.

Alex Chen, from the Mayflower Chinese Takeaway in the village, made and delivered 22 special food boxes for the youngsters and staff of Newmill Nursery to mark the Chinese New Year.

The children tucked into sesame prawn toast, chicken balls in batter, salt and pepper chips, and spring rolls when he visited on Tuesday, January 28.

Alex said: "We spoke about Chinese zodiac signs and explained this was the Year of the Rat.

"We also explained how to say Happy New Year in Chinese and to give them well wishes for the new year."

This is the sixth year Alex has donated food boxes and his time to the nursery.

Two of the youngsters made cards to say thank you in Chinese.

Alex left the children with some Chinese lucky sweets.

Nursery practitioner Sarah Coull said: "We are very grateful to Alex for his generosity and that he comes to speak to the children. It's a great experience for them and they really enjoy it."
