Cornhill SWI members welcomed guest speaker Sally Smith to their recent meeting who talked about the charity she is an ambassador for – Children on the Edge.

It was founded by Anita Roddick of The Body Shop in 1990 when she returned from a visit to an orphanage in Romania.

Since then it has flourished in 18 countries supporting children in slums, refugee camps, war zones and wherever marginalised children require protection and education. They only go where they are asked.

The core values are Hope for change and self belief. Dignity where everyone deserves self worth. Justice abiding by the UN Convention to reach full potential. Participation so children are as free to express themselves.

She told the group of particular successful schemes in India and Uganda.

After five years of campaigning the Prevention and Prohibition of Human Sacrifice Bill was passed in Uganda to end child sacrifice.

Funding is in partnership with corporate bodies and The Body Shop, and before Christmas for a week any funds Sally raises will be "fund matched" which helps boost what is collected. After tea and a raffle the competitions were judged.

The competition results were:

Handmade craft item for a child - 1 S Runcie, 2 A Pirie and 3 F Webster.

Handmade Christmas card - 1 F Webster, 2 M King and 3 A Bishop.

Flower of the month - 1 M Hepburn, 2 A Bishop and 3 M Chalmers.

President Ann Bishop gave a comprehensive vote of thanks.
