Chairman Bob Rae welcomed a good turnout of both “off the floor players” and audience to the May meeting of the Turriff and District Accordion and Fiddle club, all eagerly anticipating a great night of music with guest artistes the Susie Simpson Trio, and we certainly were not disappointed, writes Pat Steele.

Compere Bill Gray introduced Susie Simpson on lead accordion, Jock Fraser on second accordion and Gillian Stevenson on fiddle and they started their musical programme with crisp, confident playing from three accomplished musicians, complimenting one another.

The musical arrangements were simply unique, inspirational and yet sympathetic and kept the audience on their toes!!

No time to cat nap!!

They played Scottish and Irish tunes of varying tempos, real expressive playing, lively changes of tempo and the Shetland set of Dr James Donaldson and Pottinger’s Reel, was particularly impressive, with the great build up to the reel.

Real professionalism.

The audience sang along to Forty Shades of Green, the Green Glens of Antrim, toe tapped along to Midnight in Moscow, as well as the Celebration March, Silver Wedding Day, Black Adder Waltz, the Watchman’s Polka and the Deerness Polka.

Perfect performance and as Bill Gray mentioned, we may hear the Trio on “Take the Floor” in the near future.

As I execute this report, I am listening to the most recent 3 CDS by the Susie Simpson Trio.

Super selection of music, highly recommended. (P.S. I am not on commission!)

“Off the floor players” made a significant contribution to the evening’s entertainment with lively sets of singalongs, waltzes, marches and reels. Great enthusiasm and skilful playing.

Players Suzi Erick, Liam McIntosh, Alison Young, Lesley Edmunds, Andy Coutts, Brian Strang, Forbes Davidson, Dennis Shepherd and Stan Flatt joined the Trio on stage for the final stramash, making a great night of music into a superb night of music.

The audience eventually left with a spring in their step and looking for forward to next month’s meeting when the guest artistes will be the Tom Orr Trio.

The next meeting takes place at Fyvie Legion on June 2

Bill Gray thanked everyone for their contribution to the success of the evening and invited them back to Fyvie Royal British Legion, Fyvie at 7.30 p.m. on June 2.

Haste ye back musicians and audience.
