A Protection Zone and a Surveillance Zone have been declared after highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed at a premises at Newton Of Fothringham Farm, Forfar on December 29.

It comes on the back of recent cases detected in Crieff, Perth and Kinross on December 17 at Purreldeggie Farm, Southwood and another around the IV36 1HA area of Forres on December 14.

Surveillance Zones currently remain in place for locations near Banff and Turriff and this week households in both areas were sent survey forms by Gordon Clark, Head of Field Delivery (Scotalnd) APHA.

It states: "You have received this letter because your property was in a previously declared AI Protection or Surveilance Zone.

"In order to assure the health status of birds within the area around confirmed infections, we need to complete a survey of susceptibel birds.

"It you keep poultry such as chickens, ducks or geese, game birds, pigeons or other birds even as pets, you may need to take action.

An enclosed form ask owners to give details of species and type and how they are housed and advises of registration regulations for flocks of over and under 50 in number.
