Support for parents and carers helping young people with their education choices

The online Scottish Education Exhibition returns with a dedicated event which north-east parents and carers can get involved with.
They are being given a unique opportunity to help with their young person’s further and higher education choices.
The virtual Scottish Education Exhibition is running a dedicated evening event that will give parents and carers the chance to speak with experts about their young person’s choices.
Colleges and universities from across Scotland are taking part alongside Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and the Students Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS).
Spokesman for the event Calum Fraser, senior student recruitment Officer at the University of Dundee said: “With the main UCAS application deadline of January 23, 2023 getting closer by the day, this is the perfect time for young people and their parents and carers to get as much information as they can to help them make informed decisions.
“We know that parents and carers want to support their young people when they’re making these big decisions, but often events like this are just aimed at the young people themselves.
“This event means parents and carers across the country can speak to representatives from Scottish universities and colleges in one place, from the comfort of their own home.
"And with SDS and SAAS on board as well, they’ll be able to speak to expert careers advisers and get funding information and advice at the same time.”
This is the second Scottish Education Exhibition event this year, following an all-day event for senior phase pupils and college students in early October.
The event also took place in 2021 but the dedicated evening event for parents and carers is a new addition.
Sharon McIntyre, head of the career service at Skills Development Scotland said: “Research shows that parents and carers are the biggest influence on a young person’s career decisions, so it’s great that this event has been designed for them.
"Parents and carers can join on their own, or with their young person if they prefer, but the important thing is that they’re getting a chance to gather the information they need to have meaningful conversations with their young person about their future.”
As well as browsing the virtual stands and speaking to representatives, the event also gives parents and carers the chance to watch webinars covering subjects such as:
- Alternative routes into Higher Education
- Graduate Apprenticeships
- Personal statements
- How to choose and apply
- Funding
