Starting next month, SSEN Distribution will be carrying out a major refurbishment of their equipment in and around the Cruden Bay, Longhaven, Hatton and Ellon areas - work which will boost network resilience and improve the security of supply to around 1700 customers.

The programme of works, which starts on July 10 and runs through to the end of August, will see teams working on over 100km of SSEN Distribution’s existing network, replacing poles, lines and equipment to ensure the infrastructure is in optimum condition.

The news comes after over 1000 homes in the area were left without power on Monday evening following an outage that took several hours to rectify.

SSEN Distribution has advised that for everyone’s safety, there will be times when short sections of the network will need to be temporarily turned off, and for each of these occasions a letter will be sent to the individual properties to give as much advance notice as possible; in addition, information leaflets are being sent to all of the properties across the project area this week.

Speaking ahead of works starting, Graeme Gill, SSEN Distribution’s Project Manager, said: “We’re committed to doing all we can to deliver a safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity for our customers all year round, and this major refurbishment of our infrastructure will make the network more robust, in turn improving network resilience and minimising the risk of future power cuts.

“There will be occasions when we need to turn off the power on sections of the network to allow this essential work to be carried out safely, and I’d like to thank our customers in advance for their patience, as well as apologise if our work disrupts their daily routines.”

Commenting, Peterhead South and Cruden councillor Stephen Smith said: “Coming as it does just the day after the Cruden Bay, Hatton and Longhaven area suffered another prolonged power cut, this announcement from SSEN will be welcomed by local residents.

“The area is in desperate need of having its power supply made more resilient so I’m glad that this investment is taking place and look forward to the works being completed over the summer.”
