WALKERS and cyclists have been challenged to take part in the Speyside challenge over September.

The Moray Council challenge is to cover the most distance or journeys on the Speyside Way from September 1-30, either on foot or bike.

Twelve prizes are up for grabs to participants, up to value of £45 in Moray Loves Local gift cards.

The path runs from Buckie to Tomintoul and Aviemore, as well as through Craigellachie and Aberlour.

It is now part of the Speyside Low Carbon Hub project, which receives funding from European Regional Development Fund, Low Carbon Travel and Transport Challenge Fund and Transport Scotland.

Councillor Marc Macrae (Conservative, Fochabers-Lhanbryde) is the chair of the economic development and infrastructure services committee and sees the challenge as a great way of getting people to use the improved path.

He said: “Making Speyside more accessible from Craigellachie to Cragganmore for active travel is an achievement to be proud of and we’re sure locals will be enjoying this safe option for walking and wheeling.

“It’s fantastic to see growing numbers of people becoming so enthusiastic about active travel, and racking up so many active journeys on routes like the Speyside Way.

"The Speyside Challenge competition is a great way to generate a bit of healthy competition and motivate residents to get active.”
