SADNESS was to await for Buckie's volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew at the end of a search for a missing fisherman.

Last Wednesday afternoon called to help search for the man, who later died after being pulled from the water.

A Buckie RNLI spokesman said: "Buckie RNLI lifeboat William Blannin was launched at 12.49pm after reports that a fisherman was missing from his small creel boat just north of Macduff Harbour.

"The lifeboat was tasked to join the intensive search for the casualty, along with the Macduff RNLI lifeboat and our colleagues from Banff Coastguard, who searched the shoreline.

"The Coastguard helicopter from Inverness also joined the search and they spotted the casualty under the water. He was taken on board the helicopter and flown straight to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where, sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time."

The William Blannin was back at her moorings at around 4pm.

Detective inspector Sam Buchan said: “The family of the man have been advised and my thoughts are with them at this very sad time.

“Inquiries are being carried out along with our partners from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Marine Accident Investigation branch."

He added that a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.
