Some of Scotland’s very best female vocalists are set to perform at St Margaret’s Braemar in the coming months, with Hannah Rarity in concert on Saturday, August 12.

The award-winning singer from West Lothian has taken the folk music scene by storm in recent years, after winning the BBC’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year award in 2018.

Rarity has recorded and toured with some top trad acts including Blazin’ Fiddles, Rura, Niteworks and Cherish the Ladies and both of her studio albums have been shortlisted for Album of the Year in the BBC’s Scots Trad Music Awards.

She was invited to be co-musical director for the Opening Concert of Celtic Connections in 2022 and hosted the festival’s popular Late Night Sessions series at the Drygate Brewery.

Performing a carefully chosen mix of traditional, contemporary and self-penned material, Rarity has earned comparisons to the likes of Eva Cassidy and Cara Dillon, while standing confidently in her own right.

Her performance raises the curtain on a summer and autumn series of top female talent at the Deeside performance venue, with a September 1 date for Julie Fowlis already sold out.

Braemar Folk Festival returns from October 6-8, with an all-female billing on the Friday night of Scots Singer of the Year Beth Malcolm and the string supergroup Kinnaris Quintet. Tickets are on sale now.

Renowned singer, songwriter and storyteller Karine Polwart is set to perform at St Margaret’s in November as part of her solo tour with a limited number of tickets still available.

St Margaret’s venue manager Lyndsey Boden said: “Next weekend we’re excited to welcome the incredible Hannah Rarity to perform at St Margaret’s for the very first time.

“Hannah is one of Scotland’s very best young singers, equally at ease with the traditional repertoire as she is with more contemporary work.

“With two albums under her belt, and experience touring her music throughout Europe and America, she’s at a stage in her blossoming career where she’s really coming into her own as a sublime and confident performer.

“Hannah Rarity kicks off a whole season of great female vocalists taking to the stage in Braemar – with Julie Fowlis, Karine Polwart and Beth Malcolm on our programme for the months ahead.

“Our wonderful venue takes its name from St Margaret, a patron saint for strong Scottish women – we think she’d approve."
