Retired Longside Solicitor, Gordon M Hay, has been awarded the Scots Language Bairns’ Beuk o the Year award for his recent publication “Doric Nursery Rhymes for Loons & Quines”.

Written in collaboration with illustrator Rosemary Cunningham, the book brings to life some 30 well known nursery rhymes in the Doric of the north-east.

Instead of Dr Foster going to Gloucester, Gordon has Dr Murra gyan tae Turra and getting “dubs aa ower his feet”.

In the book we meet Mary, Mary Contermashious, Wee Loonie Blue, Geordie Pordie and a host of other well-known characters.

Printed by W Peters & Son, Turriff, the book has found much popularity amongst Doric speakers.

The publication of the book was supported by The Doric Board.

The Scots Language Awards are promoted by Hands up for Trad and the winner of each section of the Awards is decided by public vote.

Five Scots Bairns’ books were shortlisted and the winners announced at the award ceremony held in the Gardyne Theatre, Dundee.

Gordon said, “I went to the Award ceremony with no expectations as I was up against books published by some of the leading writers from all over Scotland.

"I was greatly honored to win the award and bring it back to Aberdeenshire.”

Gordon is a native of Turiff, having been educated at Turriff Academy and for many years was a partner in local Solicitors’ firm Stewart & Watson.

llustrator Rosemary Cunningham is based in Glasgow and has considerable experience of working with children’s books.
