Rubbish, Recycle and Restore discussion at the Inverurie Climate Cafe
THREE Rs - Rubbish, Recycle and Restore our planet were the topical themes under discussion at the Climate Cafe at the Acorn Centre in Inverurie this week.
West Church minister Rhona Cathcart welcomed guest speaker Community Waste officer Nom Wright of Aberdeenshire waste services to this inaugural Climate Cafe which was first mooted at the Climate Change Matters weekend last October.
Nom gave a detailed picture of waste matters over the last 30 years.
There have been many changes over the years including the introduction of different wheelie bins.
Come July there will be a change to waste and recycling services with the introduction of an orange lidded bin for plastics, foil, tins, cans and cartons collected every three weeks.
Blue lidded bins will be for paper, card and carboard only and the black bin for all non-recyclable waste.
Several in the audience had brought along various items for clarification as to which bin they should go to.
While all the items were plastic, the different colours meant each were destined for different bins.
Confusing? - Nom agreed if things became too complicated many people would just not bother.
A lively question and answer session followed Nom's thought-provoking talk.
Many agreed that it was a sad fact that primary school children took to recycling and waste issues with enthusiasm but seemed to lose interest once they moved to the senior school
The new brochure on Your New Recycling Service will be delivered to households in the coming weeks.
A second Climate cafe is to be held at the Acorn centre on Saturday, May 30.
