Books Abroad, which takes in second-hand books from across the UK and ships them across the world, filled a lorry with 50,000 donated items destined for Sri Lanka, in South Asia.

Since its creation more than 40 years ago, spearheaded by Aberdeenshire teacher Keith Brunskill, the charity has stopped more than four million books from going to waste.

Books Abroad, which recently received £50,000 of Just Transition Funding to help upgrade their warehouse, took to social media to share their latest achievement.

"Bye bye dreich wet Rhynie, hello sunny Sri Lanka," a charity spokesperson said.

"50,000 books have started their journey to a second life in Colombo.

"25 schools, a college and a library will benefit from all our volunteers' hard work: book collecting, sorting, selecting and packing."

Blown away by the response to their announcement, a charity spokesperson said: "Wow, over 7160 people saw this post.

"Keep liking and sharing what we do in rural Aberdeenshire."

Taking to the comments, supporters across the world shared warm words about the charity's work.

One commenter from Uganda said: "That's very good.

"Looking forward to seeing Tororo, Uganda on your list."

And another, from Canada by way of Nigeria, said: "Many thanks for all the brilliant work that you all do."
