Prosecutors have released this video after a 50-year-old Italian tourist was jailed today for a fatal crash on the A96 four years ago.

The dash-cam footage shows the road conditions faced by Alfredo Ciociola shortly before the head-on collision on July 26, 2018.

During the short segment an unrelated vehicle overtakes the minibus being driven by Ciociola.

Five people were killed soon afterwards, including the 50-year-old's own young son.

A warrant was issued after he did not appear for his original trial in August 2021. A Sicilian court subsequently ordered his extradition to Scotland.

David Green, procurator fiscal for homicide and major crime, said: "This case shows the truly tragic consequences of careless and criminal driving and the devastating effect it has on so many lives.

"Alfredo Ciociola’s refusal to come back to Scotland to face the consequences of his actions earlier caused those affected more distress.

"I would like to thank the police, our international co-operation unit and Italian authorities for their cooperation and commitment to the effective and fair administration of justice.

"My thoughts are with the families and friends of those who died as they try to cope with such terrible loss."

Ciociola, who denied falling asleep at the wheel, was involved in a head-on collision near the Drummuir junction.

A jury subsequently convicted him by a majority verdict of causing death by careless driving.

Ciociola was sentenced today at the High Court in Livingston to three years in prison.
