Two projects to install CCTV in Formartine are to receive a funding boost from Aberdeenshire Council.

Applications were made to the area committee budget by Friends of the Den, while the local authority itself will benefit from a share of the cash.

Friends of the Den work hard to keep the Turriff play park looking in tip top condition and safe for all users.

Its group members applied for £5000 to extend the existing CCTV system so it would cover the two park entrances, the skate park and the car park.

However, the total project is expected to cost around £52,500.

The CCTV would be monitored by Police Scotland.

Speaking in support of the application, Turriff councillor Anne Stirling said that the move would help to keep the community safe.

She said: “The Friends of the Den have got a good track record with fundraising and this will absolutely give them the platform and partly match fund for other applications for grants to be able to deliver this.”

Meanwhile, two applications were submitted on behalf of the Formartine area manager.

The first will see £5000 put towards a £50,000 project to install CCTV cameras in Ellon town centre.

This project will run in partnership with Ythan Community Council and Police Scotland.

The local authority claimed that the system would help to ensure Ellon is a safe place to live in, work in and visit.

Ellon councillor Louise McAllister backed the application and noted that the town had come very close to gettting CCTV installed in the past.

She added: “This is being seen as a real positive for the town centre in terms of businesses and residents alike.”

The second application will see £10,842.35 allocated to the revitalisation of The Square in Ellon.

The cash will go towards progressing the design phase of the project.

Overall, the project is expected to cost £138,423.51.

It follows on from the Ellon Town Plan design work that was carried out in 2021/22.

Ellon councillor Isobel Davidson said the project was an “exciting opportunity” for the town.
