Prime Minister Lizz Truss in a live broadcast from Downing Street lead the tributes to Her Majesty.

She said: "We are all devastated by the news that we have heard from Balmoral.

"The death of Her Majesty the Queen is a huge shock to the nation and to the world.

"Queen Elizabeth II was the rock on which modern Britain was built.

"Our country has grown and flourished under her reign.

"Britain is the great country it is today because of her.

"She ascended to the throne just after the Second World War, she championed the development of the Commonwealth from a small group of seven countries to a family of 56 nations spanning every continent of the world

"We are now a modern, thriving dynamic nation.

"Through thick and thin Queen Elizabeth II has provided us with stability and the strength that we needed.

"She was the very spirit of Great Britain and that spirit will endure.

"She has been our longest ever reigning monarch and it has been an extraordinary achievement to have presided with such dignity and grace for 70 years.

"Her life of service stretched beyond most of our living memories and in return she was loved and admired by the people of the United Kingdom and all around the world.

"She has been a personal inspiration to me and people all around the country and her devotion to duty is an example to us all.

"Earlier this week at 96 she remained determined to carry out her duties as she appointed me as her 15th Prime Minister.

"Throughout her life she has visited more than 100 countries and she has touched the lives of millions around the world.

"In the difficult days ahead we will come together with our friends across the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the world to celebrate her extraordinary lifetime of service.

"It is a day of great loss but Queen Elizabeth II leaves a great legacy.

"Today the crown passes as it has done for more than 1000 years to our new monarch, King Charles III."

Prime Minister Liz Truss said the country would now support the King.

“We offer him our loyalty and devotion, just as his mother devoted so much, to so many, for so long.

“And with the passing of the second Elizabethan age, we usher in a new era in the magnificent history of our great country, exactly as Her Majesty would have wished, by saying the words ‘God save the King’.”

Rt Rev Dr Iain Greenshields, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland said: "The faith, service and dedication of Her Majesty the Queen have been the hallmark of her long reign. She has been the steady constant in the life of our nation for over seven decades and most of us will have grown up knowing only her as our monarch.

"Her thoughtful and pertinent Christmas Day broadcasts gave an insight not only into her personal faith, but also reflected the changing concerns and attitudes of our country. They were always marked with quiet perception and a great deal of affection.

"Tireless in her duty, the Queen has demonstrated a life of selfless dedication. Her love for her family was mirrored in her love for our nation and the wider Commonwealth.

"Wherever the Queen went she brought encouragement and appreciation as she showed a genuine interest in the people she met.

"The Church of Scotland has valued Her late Majesty’s generous support, and seen in her private devotion someone for whom faith remained central throughout her long life.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to the King, and all members of the Royal Family, assuring them of our prayers and best wishes in the days ahead."

Bishop Hugh Gilbert, President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland, said:

“It was with great sadness, that we learned today of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

"Her life of outstanding service during a reign of (70) years stands as an example of dedicated public service in our own country, across the Commonwealth and around the world.

"Her determination to remain active to the end of her long life, has been an example of Christian leadership, which demonstrated her great stoicism and commitment to duty and was undoubtedly a source of stability and continuity in times of great change.

Scotland’s Catholic bishops will remember her in our prayers and pray for all those who mourn her loss."

Bishop Gilbert added: “On behalf of Scotland’s Catholic Bishops, I offer our congratulations and the promise of our prayers to King Charles as he becomes King.

"We pray for the repose of the soul of his mother Queen Elizabeth and for him and his family as he begins his reign."
