The venue was closed in October 2022, following the collapse of the charity which owned it at the time.

Efforts have been ongoing since then by the Save the Belmont group to reinstate the venue under community control.

In a statement made today, Wednesday, September 13, Belmont Community Cinema said: "We are delighted that Aberdeen City Council Finance and Resources committee have adopted officers recommendations and have today appointed Belmont Community Cinema as the preferred operator for the Belmont Cinema.

"Belmont Community Cinema Ltd is a company limited by guarantee set up by the steering group of the Save The Belmont Cinema campaign.

"Over the last few months, our team has worked tirelessly to put together a business plan and vision for The Belmont that puts the community front and centre of everything that we do.

"By focusing on film, education, community and customer experience, we believe we can deliver a truly independent, cultural cinema operated by the people of Aberdeen, to the benefit of every resident across our city.

"An intergral part of our vision is a strategic partnership with Station House Media Unit who will lead on, and deliver, an exciting education and filmmaking programme to help nurture and develop the next generation of filmmakers.

"Our team met with Council officers in July to share that vision, and today, we are excited to be given the opportunity to secure the sustainable future and long-term success that the Belmont needs.

"Today is an exciting step towards bringing our cinema back to the community.

"There is a lot of hard work ahead and that is why we will be holding a public meeting in early October to provide an update on our plans for the cinema."
