PICTURES: The Gaitherin returns in Inverurie bringing together young north-east musicians

The Gaitherin returned during the Easter break as a total of 132 primary age pupils from schools across the north-east in the Huntly, Insch, Alford, Oldmeldrum and Inverurie areas along with holiday participants from Stirling,Edinburgh and Montrose were welcomed to Inverurie Community Campus.

Each year the week long event is run in the Easter holidays for primary age, and October holidays for secondary pupils, offering a wide and diverse range of musical tuition.

This takes in a host of instruments from fiddle, ukulele, bagpipes, keyboard and guitar through to accordion, clarsach and percussion as well as dance, drama and vocal coaching.

The week cumulates in a concert performance which takes place on the Friday evening and showcases the skills learned by the young performers during the week.

The Gaitherin which operates as a charity has been working with young people from Aberdeenshire since 1993 and encourages participants to develop new skills, make new friends and generally grow as individuals and as members of the community.

A key element of this is volunteering from both adults and teenagers to help and get involved in the running of the Gaitherin, with many of the secondary age cohort helping out with the Easter event.

The youngsters are also supported by, and in turn support the Garioch Charity Shop in Inverurie as one of the local recipients of its financial support and offer up their time in return to help with the running of the shop and working on Saturdays.
