Thursday, May 8 will mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, when the Allies declared victory in Europe as Hitler’s forces surrendered.

It brought to a close fighting on the continent, which had raged since 1939 in the wake of Germany’s invasion of Poland, although the war in the Pacific was not to come to an end until August 15 when Japan capitulated.

It sparked an outpouring of joy and relief across the country and this week’s photo shows a kids VE Day in Portessie celebrating in 1945.
