Many individuals and organisations who have played a key role supporting others in the community during the pandemic were recognised for their work during a debate in the Westminster Parliament last week.

Richard Thomson, SNP MP for Gordon, took the opportunity to thank a number of local people and organisations for their outstanding contributions during the Westminster Hall debate.

During the debate on Covid-19 Community Responses, brought forward by Dr Lisa Cameron, SNP MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow, Mr Thomson took the opportunity to acknowledge the exceptional community work which local groups and their members have carried out to support those most vulnerable and in need throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Thomson highlighted how the Danestone Community Council had helped to lift local spirits with fairy doors and the welly wall.

He also recognised the work of the Insch-Leslie-Premnay-Oyne Church of Scotland and the Insch resilience group; as well as Ellon Baptist Church and the local Trussell Trust foodbank in supporting people through the pandemic.

Mr Thomson also took the opportunity to highlight how people in Huntly had pulled together in particularly adverse circumstances earlier this year when the town experienced the loss of the gas network overnight on two separate occasions during periods of sub-zero temperatures.

Commenting, Mr Thomson said: “It was a real pleasure to be able to speak in this debate and to highlight just some of the outstanding contributions that individual and community groups right across Gordon have made over the course of the pandemic.

“Often it is in the worst circumstances that we find the best of ourselves.

"It was inspiring to be able to listen to and share stories of how different communities have responded to help each other.

"I am glad that in doing so, MPs could take an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of the many unsung heroes in our communities.

“It’s impossible to say everything and to recognise everyone that you might want to during a four-minute contribution.

"There are of course many, many more individuals and groups within Gordon that deserve praise for their actions and initiatives, and my heartfelt thanks go to them too for their strong contributions in such an uncertain time.”
