A 21-year-old from Huntly is in the running to become Young Woman Engineer of the Year.

Georgina Andrew's role as a graduate apprentice at Amey Consulting involves working to improve some of Scotland’s busiest roads.

Commenting on now becoming the youngest of just six candidates to be shortlisted for the UK-wide award, she said: "I feel honoured and very excited.

"It's quite overwhelming being picked alongside some of the country’s top women engineers, but it makes me feel very proud of the journey I've been on as an apprentice over the past four years.

"I aim to be a role model for young girls, showing them that gender should not be a barrier to their entry or progression in a scientific or engineering career."

Women currently make up just one in six of those working in science and engineering within the UK.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology’s awards seek to counteract that inbalance as well as address what it calls a more general "skills crisis" in the sector.

Dr Laura Norton, who is head of diversity and inclusion at the institute, said: "Engineering and technology have been improving our world and shaping our future for centuries.

"However, due a lack of understanding, perceived gender norms and not enough visible role models for the next generation, the UK has a shortage of women engineers.

"Our awards tell the stories of incredible women engineers who are changing our world for the better."

This year’s awards are being sponsored by Airbus, Collins Aerospace, Frazer-Nash Consultancy, Leonardo, London Stansted Airport, MBDA, National Grid, Northrop Grumman, Ofcom, Royal Air Force, RS Components Grass Roots and Thales.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony being held on Thursday, December 7.
