An ongoing project in Banff is aiming to raise awareness of overdose ahead of International Overdose Awareness Day (IOADay) which takes place on Tuesday.

The IOADay started in Australia over twenty years ago and Banff Outreach have been involved in promoting overdose awareness in the last few years.

The group's Alan and Jenny Lee explained: "Our aim is to make people aware of the devastating effects on individuals, families and the community in general.

"The recent statistics on deaths through drug taking in Scotland are the worst ever and almost can be classed as a national disaster.

"We have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of interest of people passing by the display and speaking to our people about their worries and concerns about how it is effecting the families in Scotland.

"People have been quite open about relaying their personal experiences and what they have been told by neighbours or friends about the general effect of substances on people's lives.

"They have been particularly receptive to the discussions and agree with the comment that drugs and overdose are everyone's concern and problem."

Over in Inverurie IOADay is being marked at the local branch of Morrison's supermarket where an event will be held from 2pm-4pm with an advice session, information and a special tree planting taking place.
