AN INDEPENDENT oil and gas operator has boosted a local cancer charity's new appeal.
Aberdeen-based Serica Energy, which operates the Bruce gas field in the Northern North Sea, partnered with CLAN Cancer Support last year as sponsors of the CLAN Walk.
Despite the industry's woes, the firm has announced its ongoing support with a £10,000 donation to the charity’s Here for You appeal.
CLAN is facing a huge funds deficit after coronavirus forced the cancellation of its main events.
However, it is supporting hundreds of people affected by cancer throughout the pandemic with telephone and online support.
It launched the new Here for You appeal last month, with the backing of singer-songwriter Emeli Sande, in an attempt to recoup some of its losses.
Mike Killeen, Serica Energy’s head of operations, said: "Making a worthwhile contribution at a local level is important to everyone at Serica, and we truly admire the work done by CLAN before and during the lockdown.
"It has been impressive to see the charity do everything it can to continue to support local people despite the need for social distancing. We know from our association with CLAN that people affected by cancer can feel very alone, so it was important for CLAN to continue to provide its support even though it had to temporarily close the doors at its centres."
Fiona Fernie, head of fundraising at CLAN, said: "Cancer hasn’t stopped during the pandemic, and in fact many people affected by cancer are shielding so feeling more alone and concerned than ever before.
"As cancer treatments at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary ramp up, we look forward to reopening CLAN Haven in Aberdeen, and our seven centres across the north-east as soon as we can.
"However, we cannot do this alone, so the donation from Serica Energy is both welcome and timely."
The Here for You appeal asks everyone to give £10 or whatever they can to CLAN. Donations can be made at www.clanhouse.org or by calling 01224 647000.
