This winter has been one of the stormiest on record. Ten named storms battered the UK, with four of them bringing strong winds and heavy rain to parts of Scotland.

In between spells of wind and rain, came the snow, and parts of the north-east of Scotland and Shetland had to deal with travel disruption and school closures.

Scotland’s Weather: Our Changing Seasons which airs on Thursday, March 21on BBC Scotland at 8pm looks back at the extreme winter weather Scotland has experienced over the past few months.

Judith Ralston spends some time in Braemar, usually one of the coldest places in the country. She meets volunteers with Braemar Mountain Rescue Team and goes out on the hills of Glenshee on a rescue training session.

Christopher Blanchett travels with management and maintenance organisation, BEAR Scotland, to see how the cold and increasingly wet winter weather affects roads and transport infrastructure.

And Gillian Smart - inspired by amateur photographers from all over Scotland with their stunning pictures of the Northern Lights, from Aberdeenshire to Argyll - takes advantage of Scotland’s dark skies, and teams up with an expert to see if she can catch a glimpse herself.
