POLICE Scotland's North-east chief superintendent Campbell Thomson has said his division will strive to ensure the area remains one of the safest in the country to live, work and visit in 2020.

In a social media statement, chief superintendent Thomson hailed the force's work in reducing violent and acquisitive crimes, along with tackling illegal drugs.

He said: “For the past 12 months I have been in the privileged position to witness the positive and tireless work being carried out by police officers, police staff, special constables and youth volunteers within your communities.

“The introduction of mobile devices has also allowed officers to spend more time 'out on the beat', while early next year we will take the first step in North East Division's ambitious Estates project when officers and staff move into Peterhead's Buchan House alongside our partners.

“Despite the challenges faced by the public sector as a whole, I am proud to say that we are in a very strong position as we enter the New Year and will continue to find innovative ways to help ensure the North east remains one of the safest places to live, work and visit.”

He also issued a call for residents to look out for others over the festive period: “Given the nature of the work of emergency services, it will be business-as-usual for many police officers and police staff over the next couple of weeks.

“They don’t know what they will be called to or who they will need to help, but what I do know is that each call will be handled with the same professionalism and compassion that is experienced the rest of the year.

“Just because it’s Christmas does not mean the spirit of the public service fades, and I would urge you to support us by checking in on elderly or more vulnerable neighbours, reporting suspicious activity and taking care of yourself whether you are using our roads or out celebrating.

“On behalf of everyone within North East Division, I wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the communities we serve and partners we work alongside for your support over the past 12 months – it does not go unnoticed and we could not do our jobs without it.”
