People around the north-east are being encouraged to take part in a cycling competition after the success of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain in the region at the weekend.

The Grand Depart for the prestigious event, which attracted top cyclists from around the world, was held in Aberdeen and the route then saw the 80 competitors race through Aberdeenshire countryside to the finish line in the mountains at Glenshee Ski Centre.

Residents who have been inspired by the remarkable achievements by the professional cyclists can take part in the Love To Ride competition where people log their cycle ride – no matter how long or short – on a website to earn points and gain entries into prize draws.

Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council are working in partnership for the Love2Ride scheme and, as part of Cycle September, there will be prizes on offer from local businesses and anyone who logs a ten-minute ride during September will be in with a chance of winning them.

Aberdeenshire Council Leader Councillor Mark Findlater said: “The opening stage of the Tour of Britain was an unforgettable experience for spectators and riders alike and really showcased Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to a global audience.

“I feel sure that the legacy we created here is one which will see cyclists flock to our part of Scotland for years to come and at a local level, Cycle September and the Love2Ride scheme will let everyone participate in some healthy, competitive activities.”

Aberdeen City Council operational delivery committee convener Councillor Miranda Radley said: “The AJ Bell Tour of Britain was a fantastic and inspirational event for the region and we welcome initiatives which encourage people to cycle.

“Cycle September is a great opportunity to learn to ride, try a cycle commute for the first time, or switch cars for handlebars more often and Love To Ride adds an element of competitive fun for people to take part.”

Shona Park, community engagement manager at Love to Ride, said: “We’re inviting everyone to join us this Cycle September. We’ll be sharing the many benefits of cycling – for physical and mental health, for the environment – and the fun and freedom that is so easily accessible when riding a bike.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s for fun, fitness or transport – all rides count and you don’t have to go far or fast. We want everyone to experience the joy of cycling.”
