Aberdeenshire East MSP Gillian Martin is encouraging people aged 66 and over who may be eligible to apply for pension credit with less than a week to go until the deadline.
Millions of pensioners could be missing out on a critical boost to their income which would mean an extra £650 in support this year alone to help with energy bills. They have until Thursday to apply.
People who are of state pension age and have a total weekly income under roughly £200, can find out via the UK Government website – www.gov.uk/pensioncredit – or call the pension credit helpline on 0800 99 1234 to see if they could be eligible.
Pension credit is a top-up payment which could boost income up to at least £182.60 a week for single people or £278.70 a week for cohabiting or married couples of state pension age.
The average top-up is £65 a week – equivalent to £3000 a year.
Ms Martin said: “I would encourage anyone aged 66 and over to see if they could be eligible for pension credit.
“The cost-of-living crisis has added huge pressures to incomes, and I would tell anyone who may benefit from this additional financial support to find out as soon as possible.
“Energy bills are set to increase in October and January next year – it is going to be very challenging for households.
"It's important people are aware of any potential boost to their income.”
