Aberdeenshire East MSP Gillian Martin is highlighting World Breastfeeding Week by ensuring her constituency office is a safe space for women to breastfeed.

Ms Martin made the pledge as part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to “shared responsibility” in providing support, protection and helping to highlight breastfeeding across the country.

She has now applied for her constituency office to be a breastfeeding friendly workplace when it has safely reopened following the coronavirus pandemic.

World Breastfeeding Week aims to ensure people become more informed about the benefits of breastfeeding and how it can be supported more broadly in order to have a greater impact.

Commenting, Ms Martin said: “This World Breastfeeding Week, I want to ensure women feel supported and comfortable when in a public space to breastfeed their child with out fear of judgement or embarrassment.

“Breastfeeding has proven health benefits for both the baby and mum and is a great way to bond. It is important we do all we can to help women feel informed and confident in making a choice to breastfeed too.

“A fed baby is a happy baby – whether that’s bottle or breastfed – but it’s important we make sure women feel empowered in their choices and are comfortable when they’re out and about to be able to feed their child which is why I want to highlight to women they are able to do so if they come and visit my constituency office when it is safe to do so.”
