North-east MP said he respects the decision made by Liz Truss to resign as Prime Minister

Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has said he respects the decision Liz Truss made to step down as Prime Minister.

Ms Truss resigned on Thursday after just 45 days following a turbulent time in the top office.

Mr Duguid said: "Although I regret these difficult circumstances and the Prime Minister stepping down as party leader, I respect her decision and the dignity with which she has acted.

“What this country needs now, above all else, is a stable base from which we can continue delivering both the recovery from Covid and protection from global turmoil, all while striving for essential economic growth.

"The Conservative Party moves forward from this by quickly electing a new leader.

"We have already taken rapid action to help people across the entire United Kingdom weather current turbulence, and we want to continue the critical job of helping families and businesses through the winter."
