West Aberdeenshire MP Andrew Bowie has been elected to Westminster’s select committee on defence.

The committee is appointed by the House of Commons to scrutinise the Ministry of Defence and its associated public bodies.

Members are now involved in 13 current inquiries, including the Russia-Ukraine Crisis, defence and climate change, and aviation procurement.

The West Aberdeenshire MP is one of two Scottish MPs on the committee alongside Angus’ Dave Doogan.

Conservative Mr Bowie pointed to his scrutiny of UK Government spending on defence as a key element of his candidacy, twinned with a service background.

Mr Bowie served in the Royal Navy for three years before attending university in Aberdeen, and recently rejoined as a reservist.

He said: “For me, the Armed Forces and the defence of our country have been front and centre of everything I have done throughout my adult life.

"It was my experiences whilst serving at home and abroad, in places like Brazil, The Gulf and the Falkland Islands that influenced my decision to get into politics.

“More than ever, Parliamentary defence scrutiny needs members with not only a record of service but a record in scrutinising how we fund and support that service.”
