North-east bakers claim Gold, Silver and Bronze at the World Scotch Pie Championship

James Pirie & Son of Blairgowrie have once again been crowned the winner of the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards.

The business, who won the competition in 2018, 2020 and 2022 as well as taking the title World Scotch Pie Champion of Champions in 2021 have claimed the title for fifth time.

Across a range of categories including steak pie, vegetarian savoury and macaroni pie, awards were claimed by several north-east producers including a bronze award in the hot savoury category for a collaboration between Amity Seafood and The Hame Barkery in Peterhead.

The Amity Seafood Pie, crafted for the fish supplier by The Hame Bakery in Peterhead secured a bronze award in the competition that brings together Scottish bakers and producers to showcase their culinary prowess.

Peterhead based baker The Hame Bakery, not only claimed the bronze for the Amity Seafood creation but also clinched a silver award for their own macaroni pie.

Local pie makers Pie Aroma of Strichen also bagged a Gold for their steak pie while the hot savoury category also saw

silver for the The Bread Guy, Torry's Lasagne Pie and bronze for Bruce of the Broch's Pulled Pork Pie.

"The team are thrilled our Amity Seafood Pie has been singled out by the judges", said Jenna Urquhart, Business Development Executive at Amity Fish Company.

"We have always maintained The Hame Bakery have created us an award-worthy bake!

"Huge congrats are due to Patrick and his team on their success at the awards."

The Amity Seafood Pie is collaborative effort crafted using locally landed smoked haddock pieces sourced by Amity, which are then baked in The Hame Bakery's signature pie cases, with velvety mash on top.

This delicious combination of flavours and textures has made the pie a firm customer favourite since it’s launch in September, with pies being shipped out to the seafood supplier’s customers across the UK.

Lesley Cameron, CEO of Scottish Bakers, who run the competition said: “With nearly 500 of the best pies on the market entered by 78 of the best butchers, bakers and other pie makers and with each and every entry put to the test by 50 pie professionals who were looking for the ‘best of the best’, the annual winners have now been announced and they should all be very proud”.

The winning products were all considered by the judges to be the best of the best when it came to taste, touch, appearance and smell across the categories from the iconic Scotch pie to football pies and savouries, macaroni pie, steak pie, sausage roll, hot savoury, vegetarian savoury, haggis savoury, Bridie and apple pies.
