It is not clear yet when Ms Sturgeon, who has been in the role since late 2014, will step back from the role, with details to be confirmed at a press conference at 11am.

Sturgeon is the longest-serving First Minister in the history of the Scottish Parliament.

The SNP won all six elections she led the party into – three general elections, two Scottish Parliamentary elections and one European election.
