NHS Grampian has started an investigation into what are potentially linked Covid-19 cases in south Aberdeenshire.

The health board say cases in Stonehaven and Portlethen may be connected to a social gathering.

A spokeswoman said: "We are investigating a number of potentially linked cases of Covid-19 in the Portlethen/Stonehaven area.

"At present we believe these cases may be connected to a social gathering.

"Investigations are ongoing; close contacts will be identified and advised to self-isolate for 14 days.

Our advice remains that anyone who develops the recognised symptoms of Covid-19, however mild, should isolate at home and arrange a test."

Aberdeenshire Council also confirmed that some Portlethen Academy pupils are self-isolating on the advice of NHS Grampian’s public health team.

At the same time a cluster of five coronavirus cases in north-east Angus is being investigated, according to NHS Tayside.

Dr David Chandler, the health board's associate director of public health, said the positive cases were connected and one had a direct link to the Aberdeen outbreak.

All of those affected have mild symptoms and none has required medical care.

In Banff a local care home has stopped visitors after a positive test was recorded by a staff member.
