The Keith Sports Kit for All project will pass on donated pieces of sports clothing and footwear to individuals and families within the community who need it most.

The aim of the project, the first of its kind to launch in Moray, is to widen participation in physical activity while also encouraging recycling to reduce the amount of waste which goes to landfill.

The project has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of various local groups. That includes the Moray Council Active Schools and Community Sports Team, local schools, Keith Football Club, the Loft Youth Project, Keith and District Sports Development Trust and Tesco.

Roy McPherson, Principal Active Schools and Community Sport Officer, said: "There are quite a lot of these projects popping up across the country but it's really about improving accessibility to sport for people who maybe need a little extra support in the area.

"One of the big things is just the range of different community partners that are involved. Quite a few groups have worked together to make this happen.

"And the cost of living situation is having an impact on everyone. Not having suitable sports clothing or a pair of trainers can be a barrier to young people being active.

“Through the project we want to make sure youngsters, regardless of their circumstances, have the kit they need to get active, join in with others and connect with sport clubs and groups in and around Keith.”

Collection points marked with the Keith Sports Kit for All logo have been set up around the town.

Donations, including sport trainers and boots, strips, t-shirts, socks, athletic jackets and other associated items, can be dropped off at these locations.

That includes Keith Primary School, Keith Grammar School, Newmill Primary School, Keith Sports and Community Centre, the Loft and Tesco.

Items set to be donated should be clean, in good condition and placed in tied bags. Donations will then be collected, sorted and distributed by the partners of the project.

And while Keith is the first location to launch a Sport Kit for All project in Moray it is expected that more will be rolled out across the region in the near future.

Mr McPherson added: "It's great to get this off the ground and we're looking forward to seeing how it develops going forward."
