Gordon MP Richard Thomson has welcomed the new pay settlement reached between the Scottish Government and junior doctors.

The deal means that Scotland is the only nation in the UK to have successfully averted NHS strikes.

The MP said that this is “testament” to the First Minister and Scottish Government’s commitment to protecting Scotland’s NHS and delivering fair pay for junior doctors.

Mr Thomson added: “This is very good news indeed and is a deal which recognises the vital role of junior doctors and the important contribution they make towards our health service.

“This deal, which gives a fair pay settlement, is testament to the fact that Scottish Government Ministers worked constructively to produce an acceptable offer befitting of the vital work junior doctors do.

"Meanwhile, the Conservatives have done nothing but level outrageous attacks on our NHS staff and unions and have chipped away at workers’ rights and basic employee protections with anti-strike legislation and attempts to curb the powers of unions.

“The UK Government should follow the example of the Scottish Government and get round the table with the British Medical Association and offer junior doctors a fair pay deal to end the strikes in England.”
