New mural by Peterhead school pupils is unveiled

A new mural designed by pupils from Peterhead Academy has gone on show at Peterhead Family Centre.
The Academy were asked to design and create the piece following a revamp of the Windmill Street centre.
Aberdeenshire Council’s Head of Children’s Services Leigh Jolly, who joined pupils for the unveiling on Monday, said: “The mural was designed to reflect the community and history of Peterhead.
“Senior pupil Cameron Nelson designed the mural digitally and focused on folklore and the iconic lighthouse and then fellow pupil Ellah Morrison transferred the design onto large plywood.
“The group wanted to create a whimsical and fun interpretation of the local area, to spread joy and encourage imagination, so chose vibrant colours, and it looks absolutely fantastic on the wall.”
Other pupils who worked on the project were Aimee-Jo Smyth, Bobbi Porter, Kelly Chen, Lori Porter, Andrew Noble, AJ Wilson, and Mylee Hastie.
Scott Maskame of local building firm Maskame and Tait provided the wood as well as collecting the artwork and installing it.
Pupils were joined at the unveiling by art teachers Kimberly Maxwell and Sarah Hughes, head teacher Gerry McCluskey, and Aberdeenshire Council Director of Education Laurence Findlay.
Mr McCluskey added: "Peterhead Academy school community were delighted to have the opportunity to take part in the production of the mural for Peterhead Family Centre.
"Our young people got to enjoy a contextualised learning experience, whilst at the same time providing a service to our community."
Peterhead Family Centre offers a range of services to strengthen relationships, promote family wellbeing and support children.
